Cannabis Fertilizers – Feeding for Maximum Yield and Potency

Fertilizers are the fuel of cannabis cultivation. Providing the right nutrients at the right time helps the plant grow vigorously, produce potent buds, and avoid common deficiencies. Whether you grow in soil, coco, or hydroponics, understanding cannabis-specific nutrient needs is essential.

  1. Macronutrients: The Big Three (N-P-K)
  • Nitrogen (N):
Critical during the vegetative phase. Supports leaf, stem, and chlorophyll production.
  • Phosphorus (P):
Essential during flowering. Promotes root development, bud formation, and resin production.
  • Potassium (K):
Regulates water uptake, enzyme activation, and strengthens overall plant health.

Most cannabis fertilizers are labeled with N-P-K ratios, like 3-1-2 or 1-3-2 depending on the stage.

  1. Micronutrients (Secondary & Trace Elements)
  • Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur – Needed in moderate amounts
  • Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Copper, Boron, Molybdenum – Needed in trace amounts
Deficiencies in any of these can lead to yellowing, stunted growth, or deformed leaves.
  1. Nutrient Schedule by Growth Stage
Stage Focus Nutrients N-P-K Example
Seedling Light feed (mostly root boosters) 1-1-1 or root stimulator
Vegetative High N, moderate P & K 3-1-2 or 4-2-3
Pre-Flowering Balanced or transition 2-2-2
Flowering High P & K, low N 1-3-2 or 0-5-4
Late Flower Ripening blend 0-5-6 or flush
  1. Organic vs. Synthetic Fertilizers
  • Organic: Derived from natural sources like bat guano, worm castings, fish meal, compost teas.
    Slow-release, boosts soil biology.

  • Synthetic: Chemically formulated, fast-acting.
Offers precision but can stress roots if overused.
  1. Common Deficiency Symptoms
Nutrient Symptom
Nitrogen Yellowing lower leaves
Phosphorus Purpling stems, slow bud growth
Potassium Leaf edges burn or curl
Calcium Crinkled new leaves
Magnesium Yellowing between leaf veins
  1. Final Tips
  • Always measure pH (optimal: 6.0–6.5 in soil) to avoid nutrient lockout
  • Don’t overfeed – cannabis prefers light, consistent feeding
  • Use flush water (plain pH water) in final 1–2 weeks
  • Store fertilizers in a cool, dark place to preserve potency
